New cities in Africa will be able to achieve record rapid urbanization
Africa has the world’s fastest growing population at the moment. In order to cope with the increasing pressure at work and housing, several countries are planning around the continent to build brand new cities.
According to the UN Housing and Housing Center, UN Habitat, half of the population in Africa will live in cities within 15 years. It is the fastest urbanization in the world. The new urban areas will help to cope with the growing urban population and the occupation from country to city, as well as contribute to the real future issue in Africa – to create jobs.
The UN also states that there are about one billion slum inhabitants in the world. If nothing is done, this figure will have doubled by 2030. One fifth of all the world’s slums inhabitants live in sub-Saharan Africa.
Like all of Africa, there are few Nigerians who have ownership of the property the live in. This is compounded by the difficulty in securing a mortgage due to lack of collateral and high interest rates. UN Habitat is working on slum upgrade worldwide, but focuses primarily on policy work and policy action against politicians.
